"RACE: Are We So Different..." Discussion
Starting the Discussion
Read this snippet of a Narrative Essay from Teacher Zaynab.
"A Multimedia Experieince with Racism in America"
As I was researching Internet resources for my 7th and 8th graders, I found an online multimedia presentation called "Race: Are We So Different" at http://www.understandingrace.org/home.html. The American Anthropological Foundation created the presentation, which is funded by the Ford Foundation and the National Science Foundation. As I scanned the home page, frames of color overlayed on a photograph of a man panned over, in and out, changing his hue from white to brown, brown to tan, tan to yellow. This experience alone caused me to self reflect upon my own experiences growing up with racism. My story certainly doesn't span back into history like El Hajj Malik's, Martin Luther King's, Sojurner Truth's, or Nat Turner's struggles do. Racism for me was sometimes subtle, but other times it blasted....

ReplyDeleteFor question one it makes me want to go in depth in this topic by the pictures and the articles. some links that i went on were the picture gallery, and the tab that is named Familes. there are 3 forms of media used to make this website. they are images, videos, and articles.
Day 2: 10-5-1431 / 9-14-10
ReplyDeleteThe introduction for the website really caught my attention. The home page was organized, but in my opinion it doesn't look very exciting because of the black and gray background.
The links on the website are kind of abstract, which makes them interesting and makes the reader curious enough to clickon one of them.
I clicked on the links for "Lived Experience" and the timeline.
My opinion about the website is that the video in the introduction makes you really think, which then makes you look through the site in order to find out more. The video is a good idea.

Humans are diffrent in many real ways such as our eyes, ears, noses, hair, skin color, accents, religions, languages, heritage, music, dance steps, houses, jobs, degrees, height, weight, athletic ability, art, intellegence, history, and biology.
salam,
ReplyDeletethe home page of the website is very cool because i like how there are cut of parts of a face to make one face. It really fits with the topic "race." I am already interested with the subject of racism, although the HOME page didn't really persuade me other than the picture. There a lot of links such as a link that has history, human variation, lived experience and a virtual tour. I went on the history and went through some of the dates on the timelines. I also went on a virtual tour of a museum and clicked on exhibits! The forms of media this website has are videos, pictures, articles and sound recordings. The home page may not be attractive but as you search the website it is very interesting!
Humans are different in their culture, facial features, their traditions and much more!
ReplyDeleteQuestion: In what real ways are humans different?
ReplyDeleteAnswer: Humans are really different by their:
1) eyes, mouth, nose, and other facial features
2) Traditions/culture
3) the life of the person
I really liked this website and enjoyed the video, it really grabbed my attention!

The homepage was incredible. Although the background was very humdrum, the words were greatly inspiring. It made me want to learn more about racism.
There were many links on the website but "The Game of Life Experience" caught my eye. It's a game which gives you statistics on ethnicity and race in our daily life. It just shocked me as I went through the whole thing.
There are 4 types of media involved in this website: videos, photos, articles, and games. My opinion about this website is that it gets you really thinking.
I think humans are different when it comes to their level of Eman! Because genetically we are 99.9 percent related. The last 0.l percents are our fingerprint proteins.
ReplyDeleteP.S: LOVED THE WEBSITE
The website really made me realize how much people made fun of others, and as muslims we should STOP it. It also got me interested by showning vidoes of people explaining everything. I really enjoyed the quiz on this link: http://www.understandingrace.org/humvar/quiz.html. In this website theres pictures, videos, articles all about RACISM.

Salems,
ReplyDeletei think the real was that humans are different in are not because of their skin color or race its their background and personality that makes one unique also by their heart and way of life. Our manners and actions represent who we are.

I really liked the home page!
but it was really ordinary and black, but it was pretty good.
I liked the way they put pieces of people's faces together, that was really cool!
the introduction video really caught my attention and drew me into the website.
I clicked on "A girl like me" and "The story of race" (really good!)
A girl like me is about african girls who talk about how they felt that having dark skin is a bad and ugly thing. It really is touching. the story of race is basically about slavery in the US.
The media involved in this website is: photos, videos, articles, and games

Sorry, i ended up posting the day 1's activity in another website...
whoops!
humans are different not only by their facial and physical features, but also by the way they think and act, and also by their heart and soul.
salems,
ReplyDeleteDay 2: the website homepage gets me interested in learning about the topic of racism because the types of information, links, videos, and graphics on the website caught my eye mostly.the links that i went on were: Lived Experience, Race Blog, History Race in the U.S.A, the timeline movie very interesting by the way, and the forms of media used for the built of this website were the forms of magazine and newspaper.
salems
luved the website by the way
ReplyDeleteSALAM, humans are diffrent by culture. humans are also diffrent by their color. when humans have diffrent color which means that they might be black or white. everyone has a different cultre from there ancestors or maybe grandparents. and that is how humans are different
ReplyDeletewow this is such a cool web i like the home but besides that is i love the knowledge showed on the page
ReplyDeleteDay 1:
ReplyDeleteIn what real ways are we really different?
1. Features
2. Culture/Religoin
3. Health
4. Age
5. Experiences
P.S: great website...no really. -inspired
Day 2:
ReplyDeleteThe website was really inspiring. I really didn't think people would stand up and ask " Are we really that different? ". It did not only get me interested into learning more about it but also being a part of it. The website talked about what History teaches us , Scientific Facts, & also Lived Experiences which included surveys, quizzes, videos, games, and a Race blog to share your opinions, but what really caught my eye was how much they influenced on the youth that we really aren't that different.
In my opinion this website really got me inspired because it made me realize that no matter how different we are we all come from one RACE.

The webpage was very well put together and I especiall liked how the face was put togeter using many different pieces. The video really did get me inspired.
I went to the website again today and it did NOT get boring like most websites. I even learned more stuff and I luv the photo of different people's face making up 1.
ReplyDelete- Fatima
wass up the day 3 is not here how can i do it oh noooooooooooooooo
ReplyDeleteThis website really caught my eye with its pictures and links. The links I went to were: virtual exibit tour, only skin deep, and the history of race. The types of media are: photos, videos, quizzes, and games.
ReplyDeleteI love this site. I tryed out "The Human Spectrum" Drawing Conclusions and my favorite part was the ending statements: "We sort people into groups based on their skin, but that way we dont get to know that person as an individual. Do you think 'race' is a good way to group people.?"
ReplyDeleteTHX NIAHWATH FOR THE SITE.
ReplyDeleteHumans are not so different. Most of us have 2 eyes,amouth,2 ears 2 hands and two feet. we all have a heart, 2 lungs, and a brain. so, for mant Reasons weare all the same. the only difference is what is on the outside. we have different colored skin, diffferent colored eyes, different backrounds. the only real difference is on the out side because on the inside, we're all the same. you know what the say, it's what's on the inside that counts.

Day 2: Language is like a tree...
Language is like a tree. It has branches such as literature, grammar, poetry, spelling, vocabulary, and etc.this is a limerick. the literary element of poetry that is the most common is deepness, it makes you sit and think.
Day 3: The roots are the sounds we hear...
this could mean that the roots, the trees, and other parts of nature are part of our subconsciousness, yet we don't realize it. We hear them but we don't listen. this is a ballad.
Day 4: Sprouting letters suddenly appear...
this means that the work of literature is so good that you see the words turning into images. I think this is a limerick.
In what real ways are humans different?
ReplyDeleteI think humans are different in thier race: skin color, eyes, noses, hair color, accents, religion, music, dance steps, hieght, wieght, intelligence, biology, etc. But really, inside we aren't that different. we all have 2 eyes, ears, a mouth, two legs, two arms, a heart and a brain. We all have desires, goals, dreams that we want to achieve.
I think the introduction and the video with diferent faces was a great way to begin the website. It inspired me. It's the first thing you look at on the page and it grabs your attention, and makes you not think of this website as a homework assignment but as a website you want to go to on your own, to see that video again and explore the website on your own.
thanx,

ReplyDeleteDay 1-
Humans aren't different in terms of biology or race. We may come from different cultures but in reality we are all the same. We are also different, not different as in one is better than the other, but different as in we are each unique. Some people are more artistic than others, some are more athletic, and some people are getting a "B" in english because their comment couldn't be posted while others are getiing higher grades. we are all different because we are all unique in our own ways.
Day 2-
I really enjoy looking at the homepage because it really catches my eye and is interesting to look at. The moving image of features of different people put on faces of other people reminds me that we all share 99% DNA, and if you look close enough you can see that we all kind of look alike. The question "Are we really different?" written at the top of the page makes me want to learn more about racism.
On the homepage there is a virtual exhibit and a chance to look at the history of racism. I browsed both the history is very interesting because it shows a timeline. Forms of media include mostly videos like videos about the genetics of humans and stories about racism.
I think this is a great website for people who really care about racism and those who have experienced it.
- Raneem :)
racism is a disgraceful and horrible thing and any1 who does such an act is the sam idris tld me a man named mj said im strtin wit the man in the mirror so i think im gonna do the sam hbu(how about u) if we cant face ourselves we will never understandwe must learn to mak a craddle with these stubborn hands we will feel the echo of this shhattered land if we ring the bells of morning

Day 2: Language is like a tree...
Language is like a tree. it branches of different things that are taught to us to help communicate properly.
Day 3: The roots are the sounds we hear...
the roots are the sounds we hear, means that each root will speak up fopr itself representing a different person and their language i think this is a limerick.
Day 4: Sprouting letters suddenly appear...
this means that languages has different forms of communication including using letters to write and communicate.language and writing both go under the category of communication. i think this is a limerick.

Day five "The trunk is words formed with meanings understood..."
I really like the series of verses that Teacher Zaynab posted, and this one is a perfect sequel to the one before it. To me it means that every time a new word is made and used by people, the trunk of the language is being elongated and is made a bit taller. If we were just to make up new words for a language but never put them into use, the trunk or base of the language would not grow and no one would want to use the language. However, if we actually used everything we mad, the language would grow very large, as each time the trunk grow, branches are added onto the tree. These branches then add opportunities for leaves and other smaller branches to sprout. Each time you understand a word, not just hear it, this increases your ability to be inspired and add onto your Vocabulary.

Day 7
I believe what TZ meant by saying groups of sentences combine as fruits is that when planting fruits there are different aspects to that process just like when your combining sentences and after all of these processes are done precisely something great is created in one aspect a fruit will be grown and on the other aspect a piece of writing will be assembled.

P.S.:Thanks to TZ for this magnificent and incredible blog.
DAY 2
ReplyDeletewow i saw the website and it looks very interesting i also want to see the dead sea scrolls and whats inside and read knowledge
I think that humans are not different in a meaningful way because of race, physical features, height, eight, beauty, etc. What matters is our heart for how much we really care about each other.

Day 5: The trunk is words formed with meanings understood.
The meaning of this is that the trunk, the strongest part of a tree, is where words are formed with meanings that people can understand. This is a ballad.
Day 6: And outstretched branches emerge where sentences unfold with thoughts so dear.
This means that where the branches are outstretched, sentences unfold, with dear thoughts. this is a ballad.
-Zahra
Day 7:
ReplyDeletethis means taht when sentences combine they become more descriptive, and detailed just as a fruit describes it's tree. learning language always reminds me of a tree.
Day 1:
this means that there are a wide variety of ways of communicating, and through that you send messages to someone.

Day 5: The trunk is words formed with meanings understood.
The meaning of this is that the words that we learn about increase the strength of us using larger vocabulary words so the trunk is that it gets stronger.
Day 6: And outstretched branches emerge where sentences unfold with thoughts so dear.this means that the more that we think about this word and try to visualize the meaning the more we grasp the idea and try to imagina an example of the word in our heads, using our imaginations.

Day 7: Groups of sentences combine as fruits identify that tree. this means that when combine sentences to make a paragraph, just like how fruits identify what tree they come from as do our sentences, how they identify their writer where it all came from.
(continued from the previous comment)
ReplyDeleteDay 1: Sending paragraphs, extending messages --- yielding variety with forms, you send messages to me. this means that when we communicate there any many ways to do so with each other and so communication is very important to us as humans because it can start a civilization or anything that can help in this life. always keep in touch with me is what this verse it saying.
